Alva D. ""Don"" Hawkins, 80, of Naylor, Mo., died Thursday, March 6, 2014 at Poplar Bluff Regional Medical Center.
Mr. Hawkins, son of the late Nathaniel and Dovie (Berry) Hawkins, was born May 15, 1933 in Kennett, Mo. He was a member of Current River Baptist Church in Doniphan. Mr. Hawkins proudly served his country in the US Navy and had retired from the Missouri Department of Transportation. He also farmed during his spare time. Mr. Hawkins loved his grandchildren and enjoyed riding and training horses, farming, running a trackhoe and backhoe, and landscaping. During his earlier years he pitched fast pitch softball.
On June 5, 1966, he married Marlene Faith Emery in New Madrid, Mo. She survives.
Other survivors include five children: Linda Mayfield, of Marble Hill, Mo., Michael Hawkins (Beth), of St. Louis, Mo., Jackie French (Ken), of Memphis, Tenn., Gaye Guthrie (Tommy), of Sulphur Rock, Ark., and Donna Akers (Jim), of Harviell, Mo.; two step-children: Chuck Harris (Veronica), of Wylie, Texas and Susan Richards (Ronald) of Poplar Bluff; and 16 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
A son, Larry Dale Hawkins, two sisters, Della and Madeline and two brothers, Cletus and Dalton also preceded Mr. Hawkins in death.
Visitation will begin at 2 p.m. Sunday at Cotrell Funeral Chapel in Poplar Bluff. The funeral service will follow at 3 p.m. Sunday in the funeral chapel with Pastor Todd Taylor officiating. Burial with full military honors will be at Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Poplar Bluff.
