Anne Nickell Baldwin was born Jan. 14, 1930 in St. Louis, Mo. and died Aug. 24, 2017 at her home in Poplar Bluff, surrounded by her family.
When Anne was an infant, her family moved to England, where her father, Dr. Lloyd Francis Nickell was employed by Monsanto. Anne lived through World War II in England and Wales and told stories about how traumatic war in your back yard could be. When she was 14, her mother, Evalena Bowen Nickell died and Anne returned to Urbana, Ill. where she was raised by her Aunt Nyce.
During college at Northwestern University in Evanston, Ill., Anne went on a blind date with an engineering major named Bob Baldwin. They were married July 20, 1952 and enjoyed 60 years of marriage. He preceded her in death on March 13, 2013.
After they were married, Bob and Anne moved to Poplar Bluff, where Anne was a first grade teacher and Girl Scout leader at Mark Twain School. Anne soon left the work force to raise her three daughters who survive. She intermittently re-entered the work force to teach her favorite grade level, kindergarten. She taught kindergarten at the First United Methodist Church, the Presbyterian Church and Cravens School in the Poplar Bluff R-1 School District.
Anne attended First United Methodist Church, was a Girl Scout leader, and Lucy Lee Hospital volunteer, and supported Bob’s work in PTA and Band Boosters. She was also a member of Monday Study Club, Chapter KB PEO, and with her beloved friends, the Bridge Club. After Bob retired they traveled extensively in the US and Canada in their motorhome and with their camping group.
Anne is survived by her daughters, Sue Baldwin, Lynne (Bruce) Chappell, and Jan (Mark) Stockton; her grandchildren Morgan Chappell and Ryan and Jeffrey Stockton; and her granddog Lizzie.
