Audrey Nadine Brake

Audrey Nadine Brake, 84, of Poplar Bluff, passed away Friday, November 14, 2014 at Poplar Bluff Regional Medical Center.

Mrs. Brake was born February 14, 1930 in Chaonia, MO, to John Alexander and Minnie Louiza Leach Atnip. On October 15, 1950 she and Cecil Brake were married in Poplar Bluff, MO he survives of the home.

She was a 1947 graduate of Poplar Bluff High School and attended Bluff City Business College. She had retired as a secretary for R-1 Poplar Bluff School District, and served at Eugene Field School, Williams & Kennedy School and Mark Twain School. Early in her school secretarial career she worked in the office of Butler County School Superintendent, Otto Aldridge, Fred M. Morrow and others. She was active in the Mark Twain School PTA where her two sons attended. She was nominated as school employee of the month in 1981. Her nomination stated: ""Mrs. Brake's dedication to children, excellence and honest work has made her a tremendous asset to the Poplar Bluff R-1 Public Schools."" She was also previously employed at the Park-Lane Shoe Store and the General Baptist Ministries.

She knew Jesus as her Savior and was active in the South Poplar Bluff General Baptist Church having served as the Senior High Sunday School Department Superintendent and also as a Sunday School Teacher. She wrote and directed plays and skits for the youth department. She served in the Ladies Missionary Society and the Ladies Aid, assisting with the monthly luncheons. She was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Gideon's International helping distribute Gideon Bibles in a four county area.

Her hobbies were: Spending time with family, flower gardening, cooking for her family, especially breads and cookies. She baked many angel food cakes for church bazaars and as gifts for family and friends. She enjoyed hiking on mountain trails in Colorado where her son lived. She loved to read the Bible and most recently served as the assistant teacher for the ""Joint Heirs"" Sunday school class. She enjoyed singing in various gospel trios and the church choir, especially her favorite song ""How Great Thou Art."" She enjoyed listening to gospel music and watching the St. Louis Cardinals.

Other survivors include her two sons: James C. Brake (Candace) of Colorado Springs, CO, and Douglas R. Brake (Donna); grandchildren: Seth D., Luke D., and Hope D. Brake, all of Denver, NC; two sisters: V. Geraldine Arnold, of Florissant, MO, and Wilma L. McKuin of Poplar Bluff, and many nieces and nephews who she enjoyed spending time with.

She was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers: Joseph Edward Atnip, Edgar Ervin Atnip and Edmond Atnip; and four sisters: Lottie M. Brown, Ruby Lorene Davis, Gusta Barks, and L. Hasseltine Johnson.

Visitation will be Tuesday from 9:30 ? 11:00 a.m. at Cotrell Funeral Chapel, with funeral services beginning at 11:00 a.m. Pastor Michael D. Pope and Rev. Steve Winberry will be officiating. Interment to follow at Memorial Gardens Cemetery with Rev. Keith Luke officiating.
