Ava B. Brickell (Lamkin) Turner

June 15, 1915 — January 14, 2015

Ava Lamkin Brickell Turner, 99, of Harviell, Mo. died Wednesday, Jan. 14, 2015 at Poplar Bluff Regional Medical Center. She was born June 15, 1915 in Butler County to the late James and Minnie (Pry) Lamkin.

In 1932, she married Arvel Brickell, who later preceded her in death. In 1985, she was married to Malcom Turner. He preceded her in death in 1987. Mrs. Turner was an active member of Harviell First Baptist Church, a lifelong resident of Butler County, and had retired from the Neelyville School District as a teacher. She loved teaching and could remember most of her students. She enjoyed spending time with her family, quilting, gardening, cooking and reading.

Survivors include her son, Jay Brickell (Betty) of Poplar Bluff; a sister, Helen Starling of Poplar Bluff; four grandchildren: Wade McGruder (Vivian) of New Port Richey, Fla., Sheldon McGruder (Karol) of Kennesaw, Ga., Geri Brickell Evans (David) of Ballwin, Mo., J. Scott Brickell (Stacy) of Franklin, Tenn.; eight great-grandchildren: Thomas McGruder of St. Louis, Matthew and Ansley McGruder of Kennasaw, GA, Sam Evans of Ballwin, MO; Jake, Sara, Mary Clair and Ruthie Brickell of Franklin, Tenn.; a niece, Susan Golia (John) of Cathedral City, Calif.; a stepdaughter, Carolyn Tubbs (James) of Neelyville; two step granddaughters; seven step great-grandchildren; seven step great-great grandchildren; several cousins and a host of friends whom she loved.

A daughter, Jo Janet McGruder; son in-law, Ed McGruder; sister Kate Miller; brother in-laws, Charles Miller and Richard Starling; daughter in-law, Ruth Brickell; a half-brother, Earl Lamkin and two half-sisters: Bessie Sparkman and Mary Black also preceded her in death.

Visitation will begin at 10 a.m. Saturday at Cotrell Funeral Chapel in Poplar Bluff. The funeral service will follow at 11 a.m. with Rev. Robert Edwards officiating. Interment will be at Memorial Gardens Cemetery.

She will be greatly missed by her family, her extended family and a host of dear friends.
