Barbara Patterson, 75, of Poplar Bluff died Friday, March 5, 2010 at Westwood Hills Healthcare Center.
Mrs. Patterson was born on May 29, 1934 in Poplar Bluff, the second to the eldest of 9 children (including the older son of Isaiah, her father). Barbara was a professionally trained vocalist who, during the 1950s performed with musical groups, including ""Wings Over Jordan"", a gospel group founded with Ollie V. and Paul Kenny. For many years she was employed as a nursing assistant at hospitals and nursing homes in St. Louis and Poplar Bluff. Mrs. Patterson retired from Bluff Manor Nursing Home in the late 1980s. In 2008 after an extended illness she moved to Westwood Hills Healthcare Center where she finally succumbed to Alzheimer's disease.
On Feb. 11, 1953 she married Charles Patterson. He preceded her in death on Dec. 25, 1999.
Survivors include her daughters, Ella Charlene Ndi of Baltimore, MD and Kathlyn Lynette Patterson of Poplar Bluff; a brother, Donald Gene Woods of Fort Worth, Tex.; three sisters, Joyce Ann Mosley of Mira Loma, Calif., Lois Nimmers of Poplar Bluff and Charlotte Ijei of Chesterfield; a grandson, Tommy L. Patterson and wife Shannon of York, Pa.; seven great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews; and a host of friends.
Mrs. Patterson was also preceded by her parents, Isaiah (Ike) and Laura V. (Curry) Woods, sisters, Penelope (Penny) Hawes and Patricia (Patsy) Wilson, and brothers, Billy Joe Woods and Nathaniel Battles.
Visitation will begin at 1 p.m. Friday at Lively Stone Church of God, 522 Relief St. in Poplar Bluff. The funeral service will follow at 2 p.m. in the church chapel with Bishop James Price officiating and Pastor Ronald McCain assisting. Burial will be at City Cemetery in Poplar Bluff.
