David Edward Grimes, 85, of Poplar Bluff died Monday, Jan 11, 2010 at John J. Pershing VA Medical Center in Poplar Bluff.
Mr. Grimes was born July 12, 1924 in Perkins, Mo. He was a military veteran of WWII and fought in the battles of Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland and Central Europe. During the Battle of the Bulge Mr. Grimes was captured and held as a POW in Germany. He was a retired Teamster and warehouseman for Shell Oil Company in St. Louis. Mr. Grimes enjoyed spending time with his family, hunting, fishing, camping and watching the St. Louis Cardinals play baseball.
On Sept. 4, 1953 he was married to Mildred B. Riney. She preceded him in death on Dec. 22, 1980.
Survivors include his son, David and his wife Teresa Gail of Poplar Bluff; daughter, Gloria L. Fish and husband Lester Martin of Marietta, NY; five grandchildren, six great-grandchildren; three sisters: Thelma Allen of Opdyke, Ill., Aline Mary Beard of St. Louis, and Earline Tinney of Tulare, Calif.; and a brother, Raymond Grimes of East Prairie.
His parents, Samuel E. and Mary E. (White) Grimes and sisters, Hazel Williams, Virginia Brock and Lucille Weems preceded Mr. Grimes in death.
Visitation will be from 6 - 9 p.m. Wednesday at Cotrell Funeral Chapel in Poplar Bluff. The funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Cotrell Funeral Chapel with Chaplain Bill Hatch officiating. Burial with full military honors will be at 12 noon at the Missouri State Veterans Cemetery in Bloomfield.
