George W. Plumb, 96, resident of Poplar Bluff for over 60 years, passed away peacefully Saturday, March 16, 2013 at The Cedargate in Poplar Bluff
George was born on Nov. 30, 1916 in Allenville, Mo. He was a man of great faith, and was a previous member of Third Baptist Church in Poplar Bluff, where he was a Sunday School Teacher and Church Elder. In 1992, he became a member of First Baptist Church, where was also an active member and volunteer.
In 1942, George began working for Missouri Pacific Railroad as a brakeman, and later as a conductor on work trains He retired in 1980. He was a Charter Member of The National Association of Retired Veteran Railroad Employees; a member in good standing of Masonic Lodge #209 AF & AM; and a 32nd degree member in good standing in the Valley of St. Louis Orient of Missouri, Scottish Rite of Free Masonry, S.J., U.S.A.
An avid athlete, George participated in the Southern Missouri Senior Olympics until age 90. He never met a stranger, and took delight in playing the harmonica, telling stories and chatting and joking with his friends. George was a master Checker player, and enjoyed a good game of cards. He also loved to hunt and fish
In 1992, George was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 52 years, Dora Lorene Strobel Plumb. In 1993, he married Clarabelle Burkhead Plumb. She survives of Poplar Bluff.
Also surviving are two sons, John D. Plumb, of Lake St. Louis, Mo., and Ronald L. Plumb, of Glen Carbon, Ill.; two grandchildren, John Plumb and Daniel Pumb; seven great-grandchildren; and numerous great-great-grandchildren, and many loving nieces, nephews, and countless friends and neighbors.
His parents, John H. and Della V. Lape Plumb, and granddaughter, Lori E. Plumb also preceded George in death.
A Masonic Service will begin at 5:45 p.m. Tuesday at Cotrell Funeral Chapel in Poplar Bluff, with visitation following until 8 p.m. The funeral service will begin at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday in the funeral chapel with Dr. William Vail officiating. Burial will be in the Woodlawn Section of the Poplar Bluff City Cemetery.
