George W. Varner, 89, of Poplar Bluff, Mo., passed away Friday, August 19, 2016 at Westwood Hills Health and Rehabilitation Center.
Mr. Varner, the son of the late Henry and Alta Willsey Varner, was born Jan. 20, 1927 in Rest, Kans. He attended Benedict High School in Kansas and served as an Elder at LeRoy Christian Church. Mr. Varner proudly served his country in the U.S. Army and was a retired Post Master. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge, American Legion and the National Association of Postmasters of the United States. Mr. Varner enjoyed spending time with his family and friends.
On Oct. 13, 1950, he married Zelda Mae Weber in Yates Center, Kans. She survives of the home.
Other survivors include four children, Paul (Toni) Varner of Poplar Bluff, Mary (Sonny) Woollard of Quincy, Ill., Will (Bobby) Varner of Dallas, Tex., and Dan (Neva) Varner of Topeka, Kans.; a brother Charles (Dorothy) Varner of Benedict, Kans.; and a sister Helen (Herman) Troutman of Texas City, Tex.
A sister, Hazel VanMatre also preceded Mr. Varner in death.
A Celebration of Life will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday September 3rd at First Christian Church of Leroy, Kansas. A graveside service with inurnment of ashes will follow at 1 p.m. at High Prairie Cemetery of Altoona, Wilson County, Kansas.
