Harold W. Wink Byrd

Harold W. ""Wink"" Byrd, 89, of Poplar Bluff died Sunday, Dec. 22, 2013 at Oakdale Care Center in Poplar Bluff.

Mr. Byrd was born May 25, 1924 in White Oak, Mo. He attended First Baptist Church, was former owner and operator of Haps Barber Shop and had retired from the John J. Pershing VA Medical Center Barber Shop. Mr. Byrd was a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps and U.S. Navy. Serving during WWII as well as the Korean Conflict he was awarded two Purple Hearts for his valor. He was an avid St. Louis Cardinal's fan and enjoyed playing golf and cards.

On Dec. 26, 1958, he married Faye Borders in St. Louis, Mo. She preceded him in death on Sept. 2, 2007.

Survivors include two stepdaughters: Pat McKim and husband, Bob of Piggott, Ark. and Diane Midyett and husband, Jim Purcell of Poplar Bluff; five grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; 14 great-great-grandchildren; a brother, J.A. Byrd of Los Angeles, Calif.; and two sisters: Shirley Layton of Quinlan, Tex. and Merle White of Highland, Ill.

His parents, James Freeman and Ethel Adams Byrd, grandson, Shane Midyett, brother, Wes Byrd and sisters, Rena White and Jewell White also preceded Mr. Byrd in death.

Visitation will begin at 12:30 p.m. Friday at Cotrell Funeral Chapel in Poplar Bluff. The funeral service will follow at 1:30 p.m. in the Chapel with Dr. William Vail officiating. Burial with full military honors will be at Brown Chapel Cemetery in Broseley, Mo.
