Harold “DOC” Shaw. P.A., 74, of Poplar Bluff, Missouri died on Friday, May 26, 2017, at his residence.
He was born May, 20 1943 in Wichita, Kansas to Harold Dennis Shaw and Helen (Andrews) Shaw. He married Karen Elizabeth (Blalock) Shaw on June 18th, 1963. He was a member of the Church of Christ for his lifetime. He worshipped at Highland Church of Christ since 1993.
In 1963 Harold volunteered for service in the U.S. Army where he performed duties as a combat medic. His service included time during the height of the war in Vietnam as well as service in Korea. After serving, he earned his degree as a Registered Nurse at Butler County Junior College. Following his nursing degree “Doc” was one of the first to join a new program in healthcare, the MEDEX program, at the University of Washington in Seattle, WA. The MEDEX program paved the way for what would later become Physician Assistant (P.A.) programs across the country.
Since retirement from the John J. Pershing V.A. Medical Center in Poplar Bluff “Doc” has been active in Veteran’s affairs, including the Disabled American Veterans, Veterans of Foreign Wars, AMVETS, the American Legion and American Legion Riders. He was an avid motorcyclist, car collector, and even drag racer. He entered many car shows with his collectable cars and won numerous awards both racing and showing his cars. He was also active with Cancer Research.
He is survived by his sons, H. David Shaw and wife Vanessa of Dubai, UAE as well as Tim Shaw and wife Mandy of Campbell, Missouri in addition to their children.
Harold was preceded in death by his wife, Karen, parents, two sisters and one brother.
A graveside service with full military honors will be held on Tuesday, May 30, 2017 at 12:00 P.M. at the Missouri State Veteran’s Cemetery in Bloomfield, Missouri with Mr. Vernon Curry officiating.
