Helen Coleen (Walker) Brooks

Helen Coleen Walker Brooks, 91 of Chesterfield, Mo., formerly of Poplar Bluff, departed from this life on Sunday, October 25, 2015 at her home lovingly surrounded by family.

Mrs. Brooks, the daughter of James and Edith (Bush) Helvey was born on March 18, 1924 in Poplar Bluff. She graduated from Poplar Bluff High School in 1944 and attended LPN School. For many years, she worked as a devoted caregiver for private families. Mrs. Brooks was a former member of First Baptist Church in Poplar Bluff and was a member of the Missouri Historical Society. She enjoyed her family, arts, ceramics, gardening and being a sideline cheerleader for her husband in his many tennis matches.

In January of 1959, she married Leslie G. Brooks. He preceded her in death on November 4, 2006. Mrs. Brooks was also preceded by her parents, two sons, Jerome "Jerry" R. Walker and Dennis P. Walker, and two brothers, Bob Brais and Tom Brais.

Survivors include her daughter, Yvonne Walker of Chesterfield, Mo.; a daughter-in-law, Peggy Walker of Overland Park, Kans.; two granddaughters: Kim Allen and husband Jim of Lone Tree, Colo. and Kandice Brandt and husband Mike of Chula Vista, CA; and five great-grandchildren: Madelyn, Grant, Caleb, Holyn and Daxton.

Visitation will begin at 10 a.m. Friday at Cotrell Funeral Chapel with the funeral service following at 11a.m. Pastor Greg Gilberto will officiate. Burial will follow in the Woodlawn section of the Poplar Bluff City Cemetery.

Memorial donations can be made in Mrs. Brooks' memory to the Margaret Harwell Children's Art Museum or the Missouri Historical Society in Poplar Bluff.
