Herman Alfred Styles, Sr., 91, of Poplar Bluff, formerly of Pine Bluff, Ark., passed away Monday, June 17, 2013 at Westwood Hills Healthcare Center.
Mr. Styles was born Jan. 22, 1922 in Lonoke, Ark. He was a graduate of the University of Arkansas, where he was proficient in football, baseball, basketball and golf. Mr. Styles was a member of First Baptist Church in Poplar Bluff, and had retired as owner and operator of Styles Auto Leasing in Pine Bluff. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy Construction Battalion (CB's), having served during WWII. While in the Navy Mr. Styles also became a heavy weight boxer. In later years, and after playing golf for many years in the Pine Bluff and Little Rock area, he qualified four times for the Senior U.S. Open, and was named Arkansas Senior Golfer of the Year in 1986.
On Aug. 28, 1941, he married Naomi B. Wilson, in Little Rock, Ark. She survives of the home.
Other survivors include his children: Herman A. Styles, Jr. and wife, Jill, of Poplar Bluff, and Judith L. Styles Anderson, of Dothan, Ala.; eight grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren; and a sister, Grace Styles Greybill, of Ohio.
His parents, Robert Newton and Pearl Ada Wells Styles, sisters, Polly Styles Wilkerson and Vera Styles Anderson, and brothers, Carl Styles, Robert V. Styles and Wilburn ""Bill"" Styles preceded Mr. Styles in death.
A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.
