Hollis South, 92, of Poplar Bluff died Monday, Aug. 3, 2009 at John J. Pershing VA Medical Center in Poplar Bluff.
Mr. South was born June 26, 1917 in Lawrenceburg, Tenn. He had retired as a salesman with Anderson's Furniture Co., and was a WWII veteran of the U.S. Army. For his service Mr. South was awarded three Bronze Stars, a Good Conduct Medal, an European African Middle Eastern Theatre Campaign Ribbon, two Overseas Service Bars and a Purple Heart. He enjoyed repairing lawn mowers and hunting especially with his dogs.
On Sept. 28, 1937 he was married to Vera Hettie Henson. She preceded him in death on Feb. 1, 1991. On April 25, 1995 he married Susan (Turnage) Fortner in Poplar Bluff. She survives.
Other survivors include two children: Betty Joyce Eagan of Paragould, Ark. and Larry Hollis South of Caw City, Okla.; six grandchildren, twelve great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren; and three step-children: Barry Taylor, Glenda Pessetti and Michael Taylor all of St. Louis
Visitation will be from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Cotrell Funeral Chapel in Poplar Bluff. A graveside service with full military honors will follow at 11 a.m. at the Poplar Bluff City Cemetery with Chaplain Bill Hatch officiating.
In lieu of flowers the family has requested memorial contributions be made to Paragould Children's Home, 5515 Old Walcott Road, Paragould, Ark. 72450.
