Hugh Berkley (Hugh Baby) Moore, 89 of Poplar Bluff, MO went home to be with his Lord on Sunday, September 5, 2010 at the Veterans Hospital. He was born October 23, 1920 in Harrisburg, Illinois to Bailey and Nola (Parks) Moore.
Brother Hugh was a veteran of the World War II where he served as a bombardier in Army Air Force where he flew 49 combat missions and received several medals, two of which were the Distinguished Flying Cross and the Purple Heart. Following his discharge from service in 1945 he met and married Rosalie Short of Marion, Illinois on February 17, 1946. Shortly thereafter he began his lifelong career continuing to serve in the Veterans Administration hospital in Marion, Illinois. His career with the VA lead him and his family to North Carolina, Virginia, and Poplar Bluff, Missouri where he retired in 1979.
While Hugh enjoyed bowling, fishing, and golf, his passion was singing. He was an active member of the First Baptist Church of Poplar Bluff, Missouri where he served as deacon and sang with the Sanctuary Choir. He was best known for his rich, deep, solo voice, which he used as a ministry in the church and at several funerals in the Poplar Bluff area.
Hugh was preceded in death by his parents, Bailey and Nola Moore of Harrisburg, Illinois, one brother, Darrell Moore, of Bradenton, Florida, and two sisters, Gaynell Clift of Harrisburg, Illinois and Elizabeth Rose Moore, also of Harrisburg. Those who survive brother Hugh's passing are his wife, Rosalie (Short) Moore, of the home in Poplar Bluff, a daughter, Cheri Dawe of Poplar Bluff, and a son, James Moore, of East Prairie, Missouri. Brother Hugh had six grandchildren; Jeremy Dawe, Jonathan Dawe, Pilar (Dawe) Berry, and Simon Dawe, all of Poplar Bluff; Joshua Moore of Kirksville, Missouri and Janelle Moore of East Prairie, Missouri. He was also very proud of his four great grandchildren - Hunter, Amaiah, Molly and Isabell Berry, all of Poplar Bluff, Missouri.
Visitation and funeral services will be held Wednesday at the First Baptist Church of Poplar Bluff. Visitation will be from 12 until 2:00 pm, followed by the funeral service at 2:00. Rev. John Gilbert will be officiating. Interment will be at the Cana Cemetery in Goreville, Illinois.
