Rev. J.L. Mondy, 83, of Poplar Bluff died Sunday, June 10, 2012 at Oakdale Care Center in Poplar Bluff.
Rev. Mondy was born April 5, 1929 in rural Fisk, Mo. He was a graduate of Broseley High School; finished his first two years at Missouri Baptist College in Poplar Bluff; graduated from Oakland City University with a Bachelors of Arts Degree; and graduated from Southern Baptist Seminary in Louisville, Ky., with a Masters of Theology Degree. In 1965, he received an honorary Doctor of Divinity Degree from Oakland City University. He was elected the first Executive Secretary for the General Baptist Denomination, and, in 1977 he became an Elder in the United Methodist Church. Rev. Mondy served as pastor in three different United Methodist Churches in St. Louis and St. Louis County. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Poplar Bluff. Rev. Mondy was also a veteran of the U.S. Army having been stationed in Germany during the Korean Conflict. He enjoyed watching tennis, football, basketball and baseball, working on the computer and reading.
On Sept. 11, 1949, he married Lois Batten in Broseley, Mo. She survives.
Other survivors include two sisters, Pauline Little of Holly, Mich. and Virginia Barker of Poplar Bluff; and a brother, Lloyd Mondy and wife Norma also of Poplar Bluff.
His parents, Miles and Flora (Baysinger) Mondy, sisters, Shirley Jean McKinney and Goldie Rhodes and brothers, Burley Mondy, Jay Mondy and Wesley Mondy preceded Rev. Mondy in death.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Cotrell Funeral Chapel in Poplar Bluff. The funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at First United Methodist Church with Rev. David Stewart officiating. Burial will follow at the City Cemetery in Poplar Bluff.
