Jerry Vernell Doss

January 25, 1935 — February 17, 2015

Jerry Vernell Doss, 80, of Poplar Bluff, MO, passed away Tuesday, Feb. 17, 2015, at Mark Twain Caring Center.

Mr. Doss was born Jan. 25, 1935, in Herbine, AR, to Lonnie Washington and Clara Bell Herring Doss. He and Gail McNece were married in Poplar Bluff at the First Christian Church on April 4, 1980. She survives of the home.

Mr. Doss served as a chairman and deacon for many years at First Christian Church in Poplar Bluff, where he was a member. He served his country in the United States Army and was a member of the AmVets. Mr. Doss was an avid reader and a Arkansas Razorback fan. He enjoyed spending time with his family and playing poker. Mr. Doss taught school in New Edinburgh and Swifton, AR, and later coached Junior High basketball and taught history at Poplar Bluff High School where he retired after 28 years.

Along with his wife, he is survived by his daughter, Charlotte Lynn McNece, of Albuquerque, NM; a brother, Norris Doss, of Jacksonville, AR; a sister, Pat Kingery, of Benton, AR; two grandchildren: Ryan Dicken (Sarah) and Stephanie Welsh; and four great-grandchildren: Alisah, Kadin, Karson, and Bradin, all of Poplar Bluff.

His parents and a son, Greg McNece preceded him in death.

Visitation will begin at 12:30 p.m. Thursday at Cotrell Funeral Chapel until time of service at 1:30 p.m., with Rev. Jeffery Hammonds officiating. Interment will follow at the City Cemetery.
