John Thomas Hammon

John Thomas Hammon Jr., 83, of Poplar Bluff died Saturday, May 12, 2012 at his residence.

Mr. Hammon was born July 7, 1928 in Zelma, Mo. He was a member of New Home General Baptist Church, and had retired as a mechanic on 18-wheel trucks. Mr. Hammon was a veteran of the U.S. Army having served in the Korean Conflict. He enjoyed spending time with his family, playing pool, hunting and fishing.

On Feb. 6, 1954, he married Barbara Jean Worley in St. Louis, Mo. Mrs. Hammon preceded him in death on Dec. 16, 2006.

Survivors include 4 children, Brenda Kay Childers of Herrin, Ill., John Gorman Hammon of Villa Ridge, Ill., Pamela Sue Mutchek of West Frankford, Ill. and Connie Lynn Barbatti of Anna, Ill.; 10 grandchildren; 9 great-grandchildren; and 2 sisters, Evelyn Gillespie of Manteno, Ill. and Inis Ocezak of St. Louis, Mo.

His parents,John T. Sr. and Clara E. (Gobble) Hammon also preceded Mr. Hammon in death.

Visitation will begin at 12 noon Tuesday at Cotrell Funeral Chapel in Poplar Bluff. The funeral service will follow at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday in the Chapel with The Rev. Gene Lancaster officiating. Burial will be at New Hope (Old McGee) Cemetery in Wayne County, Mo.
