Dr. John Robert Loughead, 90, passed away Monday, January 7, 2013, at the Mark Twain Caring Center.
Dr. Loughead was born July 20, 1922, in Unionville, Missouri, to George Robert and Esther E. Loughead. He was graduated from Poplar Bluff High School in 1940. In 1946, he received his degree in internal medicine from St. Louis University and he received his ENT specialty from Washington University in 1950. From 1948 to 1949 he was a captain in the United States Army serving as an internist at William Beaumont General Hospital, Fort Bliss, Texas, just outside of El Paso. He returned to Poplar Bluff where practiced medicine at the Lucy Lee Hospital until his retirement.
Dr. Loughead was an avid fisherman, hunter and played golf as a member of the West- Wood Hills Country Club for many years. He enjoyed gardening, cooking and often wrote poems some of which were published in The Ozarks Mountaineer, a regional literary magazine.
On March 3, 1946, he married Mary Ethel Swain of Poplar Bluff, who survives. He is also survived by two daughters: Elizabeth Pokorny (Douglas) of Piedmont, Missouri and Rebecca Miller (Mike) of Bainbridge Island, Washington. Also surviving are three grandchildren: Amy Lanier (Joe) of Raleigh, NC, John Pennington of Piedmont, MO; and Andrew Pokorny (Hope) of Farmington, MO and three great grandchildren.
On January 9, 2013, a private graveside service and burial was in Poplar Bluff City Cemetery. Cotrell Funeral Service in Poplar Bluff was in charge of arrangements.
In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to Haven House of Poplar Bluff.
