Katherine Mae Smothers

Kay Smothers, 79, went to be with her Lord Saturday, January 31, 2026, at her home in Poplar Bluff, MO.

She was born February 15, 1946, the daughter of Henry and Madge Sample in Cape Girardeau, MO. On July 31, 1965, she married her best friend and the love of her life, Dennis Smothers.

Kay is survived by her husband, Denny Smothers, her sons, Jason (Julie) Smothers, Rodney Smothers; siblings Carol Fauss, Darlene Lohmann and Joe Henry (Marla) Sample; Grandchildren J Darby (Regina), Jackson, John-Henry (Eve), Julia and Adrian; Great Granddaughters Juniper and Rhea.

Kay was preceded in death by her parents, one sister Saundra Sample and two brother-in-laws, Walt Fauss and Alan Lohmann.

A longtime member of the Palace of Praise, Kay served in Sunday School and directed activities for the church seniors.

Kay loved art and taught for Poplar Bluff Schools as an elementary art teacher for over 30 years.

As a member of The Auxiliary Gideon International, Kay alongside her husband, placed many Bibles in the Poplar Bluff area. They also enjoyed going to car shows, searching family history, camping and canoeing.

Kay lived her life in service to God, family and church. She leaves behind a legacy of faith and selfless service to others. A hug from Kay almost always ended with a “bless you” and money placed in your hand or pocket.

Visitation will be held Wednesday, February 11th, 10 am to 12pm, with service following at 12 pm at Palace of Praise, 1400 Herschel Bess Blvd., Poplar Bluff, MO 63901 with Bishop Kent Miller officiating. Interment will be at Missouri Veterans Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to The Gideons International, PO Box 412, Poplar Bluff MO 63902.
