Lester Allen Abernathy, 86, of Wappapello, died Thursday, Dec. 13, 2012 at Barnes-Jewish Hospital in St. Louis. Mr. Abernathy was born Sept. 20, 1926 in New Madrid County, Mo. He was an inspector at Buick Motor Div. in Flint, Michigan for 31 years. Mr. Abernathy attended the Lakeland Assembly of God Church at Wappapello. He enjoyed mechanic work, fishing, hunting, boating, traveling and was devoted to his grandchildren and great grandchildren. He served with the U. S. Navy during World War II.
On May 14, 1949 he married Bessie McAlister in Piggott, Ark. She preceded him in death on Aug. 14, 2011.
Surviving are two children, Greg Abernathy (Linda) of Louisa, VA and Pat Clark (Steve) of O'Fallon, Mo.; four grandchildren, Seth Abernathy (Rachel), Sarah Abernathy, Alicia Helms (Ryan) and Melissa Clark; and four great grandchildren, Alexis and Noah Abernathy, and Avery and Rilyn Helms.
Preceding Mr. Abernathy in death were his parents, Noah and Ruth (Horn) Abernathy, and one brother Alvie Abernathy.
Visitation will be from 6:00 p.m. ? 8:00 p.m. Monday at Cotrell Funeral Chapel in Wappapello. Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Wappapello Chapel with Rev. Arvin Haynes officiating. Burial with full military honors will be at Mt. Gilead Cemetery in Clarkton, Mo.
