Loy Oliver Dollins, age 90, formerly of Wappapello, died Thursday, Nov. 14, 2013, at Sycamore Village in Swansea Ill.
Mr. Dollins was born October 22, 1923, in Neelyville, MO to Roscoe Edward and Stella Malville McKinley Dollins. On Sept. 19, 1942, he married Geneva I. McGraw in Poplar Bluff.
After returning from his stint in World War II, Mr. Dollins farmed in Southeast MO until 1950 when he moved his family to St. Louis area. He retired from Wetterau Grocery Company in 1985 with more than 35 years of service in the grocery industry. Loy and Geneva then moved to Wappapello, Mo, where they resided on Dollins Lane, off Hwy D. His wife, Geneva, died July 1, 2005, and in 2009 Loy moved to assisted living in Swansea, Ill.
Mr. Dollins was President of the Missouri Mobile Home Owners Association about 10 years and President of the John's Branch Water Co. in Wappapello for more than 20 years. He loved serving his Lord at Faith Baptist Church on Highway D in Wappapello, where he was a long time member and was instrumental in the construction of that church and its additions. He was known for his ready smile and his love of singing accompanied by his guitar and piano until Alzheimer's silenced his singing.
Mr. Dollins was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters: Dorothy Chidester, Mary Haynes, and Goldie Dollins; and two Brothers: Louis Dollins and Ted Dollins.
He is survived by his daughter, Velva (John) Swindle of Maryville, Ill; grandson, Michael David (Kathy) Swindle of Lebanon, Ill; step-mother, Nona (Paul) Miller of Poplar Bluff; two sisters: Iva Cosby, formerly of Poplar Bluff and Brenda (Bob) Peterson of Alaska; four brothers: Wayne (Brenda) Dollins of Wappapello, Jimmy (Cynthia) Dollins of Poplar Bluff, Harry (Carol) Dollins of O'Fallon, MO, and Gary (Carol) Dollins of Virginia; and sister-in-law, Josephine Adams-Murphy (James) of Patterson, MO.
Visitation for Mr. Dollins will begin at 12:30 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 16, 2013, at Cotrell Funeral Chapel in Wappapello, followed by the funeral at 1 p.m. with Rev. Gary Aubuchon officiating. Interment following the service will be at the Roberts Cemetery near Neelyville, MO with full military honors.
