Loyd Lee Matthews, 79, of Poplar Bluff passed away Saturday, January 11, 2014, at his residence in Poplar Bluff.
Mr. Matthews was born August 14, 1934 in Winona, MO to William David and Paris Weaver Matthews.
On May 23, 1953 he married LaVerne Myers in Winona, she survives of the home.
Mr. Matthews was a member of First Christian Church, served 4 years in the United States Navy during the Korean Conflict, had a BS in Education, was a member of the Poplar Bluff City Council for 12 years, and 3 years as Mayor, Retired Assistant Director for the Mingo Job Corps, and Retired Director of Sears Youth Center. He loved working for his church, spending time with his family, sporting events, hunting, fishing, and serving his community.
Survivors include 2 sons; Bill Matthews (Melinda) of Poplar Bluff, and Steve Matthews (Julia) of St. Louis, MO; a daughter, Cathy Haggerty (Sean) of Stewartville, MN; 10 grandchildren, Michael, Jon, David and Karole Matthews, Emily Pikaard, Paul Matthews, Mary Kate Barnes, Angela Crownover, Delaney Garza, and Sean Haggerty Jr.; and 4 great grandchildren, Joseph, Luna, Cecilia and Brooklyn.
His parents and infant brother Chelsea preceded him in death.
A gathering of family and friends will begin at 9:30 a.m., Saturday, at First Christian Church. A celebration of life service will follow at 11 a.m. in the church chapel, with his son, Pastor Steve Matthews officiating. Full Military Honors will also be observed on the church lawn following the service. Interment will be at Mt. Zion Cemetery in Winona, MO at a later date.
Memorial donations may be made to First Christian Church Property Fund or the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.
