Marie Louise (Cancienne) Breeden

Marie Louise (Cancienne) Breeden, 91, of Poplar Bluff died Wednesday, Aug. 10, 2011 at Westwood Hills Healthcare Center in Poplar Bluff.

Mrs. Breeden was born Nov. 6, 1919 in Labadieville, La. After the death of her father, she and her mother moved to New Orleans where she worked at the naval station and met her future husband. After her marriage and her husband?s discharge from the military they moved to Jefferson City where he assumed his job as Supreme Court Librarian. In 1952, they moved to Sikeston where their son, Tom, was born and in 1959 they became residents of Poplar Bluff where she resided until her death. Mrs. Breeden was an active member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Poplar Bluff; was a member of St. Ann?s Society; Region IX Council of Catholic Women and the Diocesan Council of Catholic Women; and a vital participant in the Church Bazaar and Wednesday morning sewing group. Mrs. Breeden enjoyed being present for daily Mass, and was a sacristan and Eucharistic Minister and Lector. She enjoyed playing golf and having a vegetable and flower garden at her home as well as the church. She especially enjoyed taking care of the flowers for the weekend church services. For many years she visited the home bound and the hospitalized parishioners, and at one time was honored for 40 years of volunteer service at John J. Pershing VA Medical Center.

On Jan. 27, 1945, she married Lester Breeden in New Orleans, La. He preceded her in death on Feb. 28, 1988.

Survivors include her son, Thomas E. ?Tom? Breeden and his wife Becky of Poplar Bluff; a granddaughter, Mallory Breeden of Springfield, Mo.; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Her parents, Edward and Philomeme (Daigle) Cancienne, sisters, Glory Guichet, Agnes Dairon, Ethel Nichols and Lois Legendre and a brother, Herman Cancienne also preceded Mrs. Breeden in death.

A Prayer Service will begin at 6 p.m. Friday at Cotrell Funeral Chapel with visitation following until 8 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 9:30 a.m. Saturday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church with Father Joseph Kappilumakkal Mathai, CMI officiating. Burial will be at Memorial Gardens Cemetery.
