Melvin A. Nunn

August 2, 1929 — November 24, 2018

Funeral services for Melvin Asa Nunn, 89, who died Saturday, Nov. 24, 2018, will begin with visitation from 6-8 p.m. Monday at Cotrell Funeral Home in Poplar Bluff. A funeral mass will begin
at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, also in Poplar Bluff, with internment following in the Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery.

Mr. Nunn died peacefully at his Poplar Bluff residence after battling his declining health for several years. His dedicated and loving wife, Virgie (Osborn) Nunn, was by his side. She survives.

Born Aug. 22, 1929, to Asa and Goldie (Franklin) Nunn, he lived a life to be proud of.

Mr. Nunn joined the United States Army when he was 17, a rebel without a cause. After two years of service, he returned to Williamsville, Mo., where he met Virgie. She soon became the love of his life. On Oct. 22, 1949, when she was 16, the couple married in Piggott, Ark. They celebrated their 69th wedding anniversary last month.

Mr. Nunn was an avid golfer. Not only did he play almost daily during his golden years at the Piedmont Canyon Club, he also watched “the golf game” every Thursday through Sunday ... much to Virgie's dismay.

Anyone who called the house and asked what he was doing could expect to hear, “Everybody I can, the easy ones twice.”

He loved country music and for years a variety of cassette tapes featuring Willie, Waylon and the boys were scattered throughout his truck. His favorite actor was “The Duke,” and we’re pretty sure he owned every John Wayne movie ever made.

In the early 1950s, Mr. and Mrs. Nunn moved to St. Louis so he could find work. Eventually, he landed a career position with General Motors, where he worked until he retired in 1985. The couple had two beautiful daughters, Janet (Nunn) Seyer and Melba (Nunn) Peters. In 1971, Mr. Nunn became a grandfather when Amy (Scharnhorst) Pfeffer was born. After Amy came Jennifer (Seyer) Anderson and Joseph Seyer. His first great-grandchild, Chelsae Cordia, arrived in 1988. Drew Pfeffer, Katie and Erin Anderson, Emma, Grace and Molly Seyer, all were born a few years later. In 2013, Mr. Nunn was promoted to great-great-grandfather when Benjamin Cordia was born. His two children and 11 grandchildren survive.

If anything truly can be said about Mr. Nunn, it is that he was the type of man all men should aspire to be. He was a beloved husband, father, grand, great, and great-great-grandfather, and will be deeply missed.

Also surviving are Lynn (Janet) Seyer, Christopher (Jennifer) Anderson, and Mindy (Joseph) Seyer.

Mr. Nunn was preceded in death by his parents: Asa and Goldie (Franklin) Nunn; three brothers: Lee, Delmar and James Nunn; and four sisters: Blanche May Marvel, Sybil (Wilmoth) Hillis, Stacey Hillis, and Norma Tubb.
