Norene Alpha Sloan was born February 6, 1921 in Augusta, AR to Elmo Clopton and Nona Magnolia Curry. She was the third of eight children. She moved to Poplar Bluff with her family in 1938 and joined Central Missionary Baptist Church under Rev. A.J. Maxwell, where she remained a lifelong member. She was later happily married to Robert Sloan for 41 years until his death in 1994. No children were born to this union.
Norene was employed as a domestic worker for the Jeffries, Caldwell, Wolpers and McMullins families for many years.
Norene actively served her church and community, where she received an award of appreciation. Also on January 15, 2018 she received an honorary award from the Poplar Bluff community.
Norene was preceded in death by her parents, husband, one brother, L.B. Clopton and four sisters, Aretha Williams, Mable Little, Opereatus Tomlin and Joyce Smith.
Norene leaves to cherish her precious memories one brother, Willie Curtis Clopton of Bakersfield, CA and one sister, Venoise Carter of Riverside CA; and a host of nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews and many friends.
A special thank you goes out to Dr. Michael Caldwell and Mark Twain Caring Center.
Visitation will begin at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Pleasant Hill Missionary Baptist Church, 913 Garfield St., with the funeral service following at 12 p.m. The Rev. Ronald McCain will officiate. Burial will be in the Poplar Bluff City Cemetery.
A Repass will follow at the church after burial.
