Opal Hampton, 85, of Poplar Bluff died Tuesday, April 20, 2010 in Poplar Bluff.
Mrs. Hampton was born Nov. 26, 1924, in Broseley, and lived in Butler County most of her life. She was a member of Third Baptist Church in Poplar Bluff, where she previously taught a lady's Sunday School class as well as Vacation Bible School. Mrs. Hampton was a member of the church choir and often sang solos and was a member of Northside Nutrition Center's Senior Gospel Choir, she also sang in a women's gospel quartet. For several years she worked as a waitress before retiring and was a homemaker. Mrs. Hampton enjoyed seeing and being with her family, cooking, working with flowers, camping, crocheting, quilting, and singing gospel songs.
On Feb. 10, 1941, she married Paul Wade Hampton in Poplar Bluff. He preceded her in death on April 18, 1999.
Survivors include her 2 daughters, Carol Hoppe and husband Richard of Wright City, and Paulette Darlin and husband Steve of Poplar Bluff; a son, Louie Hampton and wife Madelyn; 7 grandchildren: Teresa Connell of Cape Girardeau, Cindy Hampton Ragsdale and husband Rusty of Festus, Kevin Darlin and wife Brittney, Kimberly Glick and husband Russ of Poplar Bluff, Brian Hoppe and wife Michelle of Davison, Mich., Darin Hoppe and wife Jessica of O'Fallon and Jason Hoppe of Las Vegas, NV; 14 great-grandchildren: Colleen Crader; Taylor and August Connell; Cole Schaumberg; Shelbie and Joseph Darlin; Ethan, Ryan, Collin, and Kameron Glick; Allison, Andrew, and Anna Hoppe; and Morgan Hoppe; a sister, Martha Sparkman and husband Bob of Poplar Bluff; 3 brothers, Jake Fuson and wife Jane of Cameron, Calif.; Charles Loury and wife Katie of Poplar Bluff; and Donald Fuson of Mountain Home, Ark.
Her parents, Alan and Mary (Winder) Fuson; a granddaughter, Diana Hampton Crader; and a brother, Paul Fuson, preceded Mrs. Hampton in death.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Cotrell Funeral Chapel. The funeral service will be at 1 p.m. Friday in the Chapel with the Rev. Steve Patterson officiating. Burial will be at Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Poplar Bluff.
