Opal Mae (Browning) Spencer

Opal Mae Smothers Browning Spencer, 86, of Poplar Bluff, MO passed away Wednesday, March 12, 2014, at the Poplar Bluff Regional Medical Center.

Mrs. Spencer was born September 3, 1927 in Fairdealing, MO to the late Leonard and Mary Walker Smothers. She lived most of her life in Poplar Bluff.

On August 9, 1944, she was united in marriage to Gilbert A. ""Slim"" Browning. To this union was born six children. He preceded her in death on May 20, 1972. Then on November 17, 1978, she married Alvin E. ""Sonny"" Spencer. He survives of the home.

Mrs. Spencer was of the Baptist faith. She enjoyed trout fishing, working, and spending time with her family. Mrs. Spencer also chopped cotton, hauled cotton pickers, and hung wallpaper. She worked at C&F Auto Salvage along side her first husband. Mrs. Spencer later worked at and was co owner of Spencer Ready Mix.

Survivors also include: two daughters, Erma M. Suttner (David) of Detroit, Mich. and M. Marie Briggs of Poplar Bluff; three sons, Chris F. Browning (Alita), Gregory D. Browning (Michelle ""Mimi"") and Leonard E. Browning all of Poplar Bluff; two stepchildren, Keith Spencer and Tammy Spencer; 10 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; a sister, Neoma Bishop; a brother, Clifford Smothers; a sister-in-law, Mabel Graham; and a brother-in-law, Clifford Browning.

Mrs. Spencer was also preceded in death by a son, Gilbert Ray Browning; a son-in-law, Jack Lee Briggs; sister Eva Fox; three brothers, Bartley Smothers, Ralph Smothers, and Clyde Smothers; a stepson, Joe Spencer; three sisters-in-law, Della Graham, Geneva Schenewerk, and Ila Whitmer; and five brothers-in-law, Rollie Browning, Junior Browning, Woodrow ""Doc"" Browning, William Browning, and James E. Browning.

Family visitation will be from 5 to 6 p.m. and public visitation from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at Cotrell Funeral Chapel. A funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Cotrell Funeral Chapel with Rev. Keith Luke officiating.
