Rose (Rozella Jane) Metz McDaniel, beloved mother, grandmother, sister and special friend, died Friday morning, January 24, 2014 at the Mark Twain Caring Center. Rose, the fourth of seven children of L.T. and Columbia Martin Metz, was born on February 1, 1920, in Poplar Bluff.
Rose was a graduate of Poplar Bluff High School and Southeast Missouri State Teachers' College (now SEMO University) where she received the Lifetime Teaching Certificate, and was a member of Tri Delta sorority. She also attended Texas State College for Women. Rose taught school briefly before her marriage to Charles T. (Muggs) McDaniel Jr., on December 20, 1941. He preceded her in death on May 27, 1991.
Muggs and Rose were parents of Dr. Charlotte McDaniel of Charlottesville, VA, Janis Ries of Salt Lake City, UT, and C.T. (III) and Karen McDaniel of Poplar Bluff; grandparents of Dr. Kirk (Ellen) Kelsey and Kris Kaseman, of Pittsburgh, PA, Jim Ries and Peter Ries, of Salt Lake City, UT, and Kimbrelly and Abigail McDaniel of Poplar Bluff; and great-grandparents of Adair Evelyn Kelsey of Pittsburgh, all who survive.
Also surviving is her sister, Frances Metz Godwin; sister-in-laws, Jan Harrell Metz and Mayce Taylor; 13 nieces and nephews; 28 great nieces and nephews; and 45 great grand nephews and nieces.
In addition to her husband and parents, her siblings, Lynn T. Metz Jr., Eugene Metz, Margaret Metz Cotrell, Mary Metz Crowe Carter, USAF Col. James H. Metz, and her nieces, Ann Crowe Essig and Maryjeanne Crowe Crawford, preceded her in death.
Rose was a lifelong member of the First Presbyterian Church of Poplar Bluff, where she was an Ordained Elder and served several times on the Session. Rose was twice a delegate to the National General Assembly Presbyterian Church USA. She taught Sunday School and Vacation Bible School for many years, and was President of the Presbyterian Women's Association, and chairman of the Evangelistic Committee as well. She was faithful in calling on visitors, newcomers, shut-ins and those hospitalized, usually taking casseroles, cakes and breads to their homes.
In 2011, she was honored by the Giddings-Lovejoy Presbyterian as a Presbyterian over 90 years of age, who exemplified a life of Christian Service.
Rose was a member of PEO Chapter DG and the Monday Study Club. She served twice as president of the Williamson-Kennedy PTA, was a Girl Scouts leader, and a Cub Scout den mother. Rose played in her bridge club until last year, and was an active participant on the Republican political scene encouraging people to vote.
Visitation will begin at 10 a.m., Monday at First Presbyterian Church in Poplar Bluff. The funeral service will follow at 11 a.m. in the church sanctuary, with Pastor Debra Tracy officiating. Interment will be at Memorial Gardens Cemetery.
