Sara Lou Jones, 94, of Poplar Bluff, died Thursday, May 7, 2015 at her residence surrounded by her family after a long battle with renal and congestive heart failure.
Mrs. Jones, one of 14 children of the late Benjamin and Sara Townsend Smith, was born Dec. 30, 1920, in Pheba, Miss. She was an active member of True Believer's Church and had retired as a Social Worker. Mrs. Jones was also very active in community politics, worked as a volunteer poll worker, the RSVP volunteers and SEMO Development Corp., and was founder and president of the Loving Sisters and Brothers Singing group as well as the Gospel Voices. Mrs. Jones was an inspiration to many people through music, a funny story or a simple smile and will be missed by all who knew and loved her.
She was married to Rev. Robert Jones, who preceded her in death in January of 1990.
Survivors include two children: Early Boyd, of St. Louis and Tony Boyd, of Poplar Bluff; one grandchild, Vivian Boyd (Ronald) Mock; two great-grandchildren: Brittney Gambill and Lauren Gambill; and three sisters: Lorene Myles, of St. Louis, Georgia Mae Gladney, of Kansas City, Mo., and Octavia Wren, of Senatobia, Miss.
She was also preceded in death by 11 brothers and sisters.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at Cotrell Funeral Chapel in Poplar Bluff. The funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Central Baptist Church with Rev. Johnny Williams officiating. Burial will be at the Poplar Bluff City Cemetery.
