Glenn E. Hudson, 83, of Doniphan, Mo., died Monday, Jan. 3, 2011 at John J. Pershing VA Medical Center Community Living Center in Poplar Bluff after a long illness.
Sergeant Major Hudson was born Jan. 1, 1928 in Brawley, Calif., and graduated from Brawley Union High school. He enrolled in the University of California at Los Angeles and was drafted into the Army at Fort Mac Arthur, California in the later part of WWII. Sergeant Major Hudson received his basic training at Camp Crowder, Mo., and advance training at Ft. Monmouth, New Jersey. At the close of World War II he was assigned to War Department Headquarters at The Pentagon in Washington, D.C., where he left the service in 1947. He then entered the Imperial Valley Branch of the University of California where he received his Associate degree. He served with the 111th Armored Calvary Regiment during the Korean Conflict as First Sergeant of an Armored Recon Company. At the close of the Korean Conflict he left active duty to attend the University of California at Berkley. Sergeant Major Hudson re-entered the service as a Private in the mid 1950s and has remained on active duty since that time. His overseas tours have included Germany, The Netherlands, Korea, Vietnam and Japan. He served in the Infantry, Army Security Agency, Combat Engineers, Armored Calvary, Signal Corps, Military Police, Army Aviation, U.S. Army Meteorological Service, Armored Engineers, and the Transportation Corps. Among his awards are the Bronze Star, the Air Medal and the Army Commendation Medal.
His undergraduate and graduate degrees were earned at the Metropolitan Collegiate Institute, London, U.K., and included the Doctor of Science in International Safety/Loss Control Engineering (1977).
In 1984, he moved to Doniphan, Mo. with his second wife, Zdena and operated the Western States University for Professional Studies until 2002 and the World Safety Organization, which is now located in Warrensburg, Mo.
Sergeant Major Hudson was a member of the Kiwanis International, Elks, VFW, DAV, AmVets, American Legion and other service organizations.
Survivors include his wife, Zdena; children, Lora Hudson-Keller, Sandra Dunlap, Wayne Hudson; grandchildren, Bethany, Lucas, Tiffany, Justine and Jacob; and great-grandchildren, Logan and Amelia.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Doris Hudson, parents, Lee and Ethel Hudson, sister, Sybil and brother, Wayne.
A private memorial service was held at the John J. Pershing VA Medical Center Chapel. Interment with full military honors will be at Miramar National Cemetery in San Diego, Calif. at a later date.
