Steven Earl Shock

September 14, 1962 — May 24, 2020

Poplar Bluff, Missouri

Steven Earl Shock died unexpectedly May 24, 2020.  Steve was born to John and Mary Shock on September 14, 1962 in Hayti, MO. Educated in Poplar Bluff, he graduated from Poplar Bluff High School in 1980, and earned degrees from Southeast Missouri State University and the University of Wisconsin Central States School of Banking.

Steve spent his career in banking in Poplar Bluff. He served as a senior officer and on the board of directors of both First Midwest Bank and Sterling Bank. Steve was especially proud to be one of the original founders of Sterling Bank where he most recently served in the capacity of vice-president.

Steve was a longtime board member of the Missouri Golf Association serving in various leadership capacities and was the only person from Poplar Bluff to ever serve as president of the association. He was also past president of Westwood Hills Country Club and board secretary.

Steve was an accomplished amateur golfer who won numerous team and individual tournaments playing alongside his many friends, but he particularly enjoyed playing and winning with his dad and brother. One of Steve’s many golf accolades was being a member of the 1980 Missouri State High School Championship Golf Team which was later inducted into the Poplar Bluff Sports Hall of Fame.

Steve was an avid golf historian and enthusiast whose knowledge of the game and its history was second to none. He was passionate about golf course architecture and enjoyed playing courses all over the country and abroad.

He was a member of the board of directors of ADAPT, Inc, a Claudia Foundation mentor, a Poplar Bluff Hospice volunteer, and a member of Fellowship Baptist Church.

Steve was loved, not by a few, but by all who knew him because he was a loyal and caring friend. He was unashamedly proud of his family, but would say without hesitation that his son Stewart was his greatest accomplishment.

Steve is survived by his parents John and Mary, his brother John and wife Becky, his son Stewart and fiancée Haley Hornbeck, and nieces Rachel Shock, Jordan Shock and Brooke Dobbs. Steve is also survived by his best friend Nancy Shock and special friend Brenda Johnson Menley.

A Celebration of Life will begin at 10:00 a.m. August 15, 2020 at Fellowship General Baptist Church in Poplar Bluff.
