Vera Lee Groves

Vera Lee Groves, 90, of Poplar Bluff, Mo., stepped into eternity Thursday, May 17, 2018 at Poplar Bluff Regional Medical Center.

Mrs. Groves, the daughter of the late R. Lee and Marion (Matthews) Armstrong, was born May 7, 1928 in Oklahoma City, Okla. She was a member of the First Church of God for 70 years. She worked in the nursery, helped chaperone the youth and was a member of the Women’s Missionary Society. Mrs. Groves worked in Baby World at Wal-Mart for many years. After retirement she loved raising flowers, trail riding with her husband, and taking trips and spending time with her family and friends. Mrs. Groves also enjoyed visiting and ministering to the sick and shut-ins in their home as well as hospitals and nursing homes.

She married the love of her life James W. “Bill” Groves on Jan. 22, 1949 in Piggott, Ark. He preceded her in death on Aug. 12, 2011.

Survivors include her sons, Lee Groves and wife Donna and Randy Groves and wife Faith of Poplar Bluff; a daughter-in-law Carla Groves of Tennessee; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren; a brother Earl Armstrong of Belleville, Ill.; and a host of nieces and nephews as well as other relatives and special friends.

Her son Jim Groves, a sister, Betty Armstrong Sappington and a brother Richard Lee Armstrong also preceded her in death.

Visitation will be 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday at Cotrell Funeral Chapel. The funeral service will begin at 10 a.m. Monday at the First Church of God with Rev. Ben Higgins officiating. Burial will be at the City Cemetery.
