Walter Cornelius Dunson

Walter C. Dunson, 83, of Broseley, Mo., died Saturday, Jan. 11, 2014.

Walter was born July 17, 1930 in Jackson, Miss., to Elbe and Mattie (Smith) Dunson. At a young age, he professed his belief in Jesus at Hope Spring Baptist Church in Jackson, Miss. Later in life, he became a member of New Home Missionary Baptist Church, where his membership remained until his homegoing.

In 1950, Walter enlisted in the U.S. Army, where he served two years. After discharge he resided in Chicago, Ill, where he met his soon to be wife, Mary Ewing. In 1953, they married and were happily married for 60 years. To this union three children were born: Darnell (wife, LaQuisha) Dunson of Broseley, Mo., Walter C. Dunson, Jr., who preceded him in death and Kevin Dunson of Lancaster, Calif. Walter also had a daughter, Velma Shane, who also preceded him in death. In 1985, after serving 33 years with the U.S. Postal Service in Chicago, Walter and Mary moved to Broseley, Mo.

Other survivors also include a brother, Elbe (wife, Jewell) Dunson, Jr. of Detroit, Mich.; a sister, Helen Young of Chicago, Ill.; 11 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

His parents and two sisters, Annie Mary Tolliver and Morris Ella Williams also preceded him in death.

Visitation will begin at 10 a.m. Monday at New Home Missionary Baptist Church in Broseley, with the funeral service following at 11 a.m. The Rev. Andrew Jefferson will officiate and the Rev. Johnny Williams will present the eulogy. A repass dinner will immediately follow at the church. Burial for Walter will be Wednesday at Hope Springs Cemetery in Jackson, Miss.
