William R. ""Bill"" Hogg, 88, longtime businessman of Poplar Bluff died Tuesday, Dec. 16, 2008 at his residence.
Mr. Hogg was born Feb. 15, 1920 in Poplar Bluff. He was an active member for 74 years at the First Baptist Church in Poplar Bluff, where he served as a trustee and usher as well as a volunteer in the Christian Life Center. Mr. Hogg had retired after 62 years as owner and operator of Jim Hogg's Supermarket. He was a veteran of the United States Navy having served during World War II, and was a participant in the first local veteran honor tour group to tour the World War II Memorial in Washington, DC. Mr. Hogg was also member of the Poplar Bluff Kiwanis Club having a 50 year plus perfect attendance. He enjoyed spending time with his family and friends, being active in his church and community, fishing, golfing, and woodworking.
On Dec. 1, 1946 he was married to Virginia B. McCarver, in Poplar Bluff. She preceded him in death on May 28, 2003.
Survivors include his daughter, Susan Hoxworth and husband Randy, of Poplar Bluff; daughter-in-law, Karen S. Hogg, of Poplar Bluff; four grandchildren: Andrea Freeman and husband Toby, of Jackson, Mo., Jessica Ellington and husband Matt, of Bishop, Calif. and Emily Elizabeth Hogg, of Poplar Bluff and Bill Hoxworth and wife Karla, of Cape Girardeau; four great-grandchildren: Abby Hoxworth, Lauren Hoxworth, Evan Hoxworth and Keilah Freeman; sisters, Clarebel Gray, of Poplar Bluff and Mollie Chornak, of Marion, Ill; and several nieces and nephews.
Mr. Hogg was preceded in death by his parents, James B. and Mae (Hart) Hogg, daughter, Emily Jane Hogg (1969), son, James Evan ""Jim"" Hogg (2004) and sister, Dorothy Hammons (1984).
Visitation will be from 3 - 8 p.m. Friday at First Baptist Church, in Poplar Bluff. The funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at First Baptist Church with Dr. William Vail officiating. Burial with full military honors will be at Memorial Gardens Cemetery, in Poplar Bluff.
